Flags That Look Almost Identical (and How to Tell Them Apart)
June 23, 2026
Some country flags are so similar that even geography buffs trip over them. Here are the classic look‑alikes — and the one detail that separates each pair.
Chad 🇹🇩 vs. Romania 🇷🇴
Both are blue‑yellow‑red vertical tricolors. The difference is tiny: Chad’s blue is darker (navy) while Romania’s is a brighter cobalt. Honestly, even officials have debated these two — so don’t feel bad.
Indonesia 🇮🇩 vs. Monaco 🇲🇨
Both are simply red over white. The only reliable difference is shape/ratio: Monaco’s flag is more square, Indonesia’s is wider. Context usually decides it.
Australia 🇦🇺 vs. New Zealand 🇳🇿
Both have the Union Jack and the Southern Cross on blue. The trick:
- New Zealand has four red stars with white outlines.
- Australia has six white stars (including the large Commonwealth Star below the Union Jack).
Count the stars and check the color.
Netherlands 🇳🇱 vs. Luxembourg 🇱🇺
Both are red‑white‑blue horizontal tricolors. Luxembourg’s blue is lighter (sky blue) and its flag is slightly longer. The Netherlands uses a deeper navy.
Norway 🇳🇴 vs. Iceland 🇮🇸
Both are Nordic‑cross flags with red, white, and blue — just inverted. Norway is red with a blue cross; Iceland is blue with a red cross. Remember: Iceland = ice = more blue.
Ireland 🇮🇪 vs. Ivory Coast 🇨🇮
Same green‑white‑orange tricolor — but mirrored. Ireland goes green → white → orange (green on the hoist). Ivory Coast goes orange → white → green.
The fastest way to lock these in is to see them back‑to‑back under time pressure. Try the harder difficulties in the flag challenge — the rarer the country, the more these subtle differences matter.
