Brazil is the largest country in South America — it occupies nearly half the continent and borders every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. This quiz tests your knowledge of Brazil's 26 states and the Federal District.

Brazil's State System

Brazil's states are grouped into five regions: North (Amazon), Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South. The Southeast is the economic heartland — home to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte. The North is dominated by the Amazon rainforest and is the least populated region.

São Paulo is not just Brazil's most populous state, it's more populous than any country in South America except Brazil itself. Amazonas is the largest state by area, covering much of the Amazon basin.
