Why Oceania's Capitals Are So Hard

Oceania is the capitals category where even strong geography players lose points. Beyond Canberra (Australia) and Wellington (New Zealand), the region is made up of small Pacific island nations whose capitals rarely appear in the news: Funafuti, Yaren, Majuro, South Tarawa, Ngerulmud.

The good news is there are only 14 sovereign capitals to learn. The challenge is that many are single towns on tiny atolls, so the names are unfamiliar and easy to confuse. Learning them in cultural clusters — Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia — makes the task manageable.

The Two Big Traps: Australia and New Zealand

The two largest Oceania nations are also the two most common quiz mistakes:

Australia — the capital is Canberra, not Sydney or Melbourne. When the country federated in 1901, Sydney and Melbourne both wanted the honour, so a brand-new capital was built between them and inaugurated in 1913.

New Zealand — the capital is Wellington, at the southern tip of the North Island, not the larger city of Auckland. Wellington is the world's southernmost national capital.

Nail these two and you have removed the most likely errors before you even reach the Pacific islands.

The island capitals sort neatly into Oceania's three cultural sub-regions:

Melanesia — Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea), Suva (Fiji), Honiara (Solomon Islands), Port Vila (Vanuatu).

Micronesia — Palikir (Micronesia), Ngerulmud (Palau — one of the smallest capitals in the world), Majuro (Marshall Islands), Yaren (Nauru, which has no official capital, so Yaren is used), South Tarawa (Kiribati).

Polynesia — Apia (Samoa), Nukuʻalofa (Tonga), Funafuti (Tuvalu). Funafuti and the others sit on low coral atolls only a few metres above sea level.
