What Defines Latin America?

Latin America is not a continent — it is a cultural and linguistic region. It includes the countries of the Americas where Spanish, Portuguese, or French are spoken: Mexico, Central America (except Belize), the Spanish-speaking Caribbean islands, and South America (except Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana).

The term dates to the 19th century and reflects the shared colonial heritage of the region. Brazil stands out as the only Portuguese-speaking country in Latin America — and with over 200 million people, it is also the largest by both area and population.

Flags of Latin America: Patterns You Will Notice

Latin American flags share striking visual patterns, and once you spot them, the region's flag quiz becomes much easier:

The Colombian tricolour — yellow, blue, and red — appears repeatedly, sometimes rotated. Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela all use versions of this scheme, a legacy of Gran Colombia.

Blue and white stripes — Argentina and Uruguay share the same blue-on-white horizontal bands. Argentina has a sun in the centre; Uruguay has a sun on the top-left canton.

Red, white, and blue — Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Panama all use variations. Chile's is the most distinctive: a red base, white star, and blue canton.

Green and yellow — Brazil's green field with a yellow diamond is unique in the region. The green represents the House of Braganza; the yellow, the House of Habsburg.

Once you learn these colour families, identifying a Latin American flag becomes a process of elimination rather than brute memorisation.

Country Groups in Latin America

Breaking Latin America into sub-regions makes the geography easier to learn:

Mexico and Central America — Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama. These eight countries connect North and South America. Belize is the only English-speaking country in this group.

The Caribbean — Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti. Three island nations with distinct histories and languages (Spanish, Spanish, and French).

Northern South America — Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia. The Andean countries, dominated by the mountain range running down the western side of the continent.

Southern South America — Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay. Chile and Argentina run the length of the continent's spine. Uruguay and Paraguay are the small neighbours east and north of Argentina.

Brazil and the Guianas — Brazil (half the continent's landmass), Guyana, and Suriname. Guyana and Suriname are the only two non-Latin countries in South America — English and Dutch respectively.

Latin America includes 22 countries across Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America where Spanish, Portuguese, or French are spoken. Brazil is the largest by far, while flags in the region cluster into recognisable colour families — yellow-blue-red from Gran Colombia and blue-white bands shared by Argentina and Uruguay.

Quiz tip: The trickiest to place are Guyana and Suriname on the northern coast, plus Paraguay and Uruguay — two landlocked-vs-coastal neighbours people constantly mix up.

FAQ

How many countries are in Latin America?

There are 22 countries in Latin America by the standard definition. This includes Mexico, 7 Central American and Caribbean nations, and 14 South American countries. French Guiana is often grouped with Latin America culturally and linguistically, but it is an overseas department of France, not a sovereign country.

What is the largest country in Latin America?

Brazil is by far the largest country in Latin America, covering 8.5 million square kilometres — nearly half of South America's total area. It is also the most populous, with over 200 million people, and the only Portuguese-speaking country in the region.

Which Latin American flags are most similar?

Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela share the most similar flags — all use yellow, blue, and red tricolours derived from the flag of Gran Colombia. Colombia's flag uses horizontal bands; Ecuador and Venezuela add coats of arms. Chile and Cuba also share a similar layout: a white star on a blue canton with red and white stripes.

What is the only country in Latin America with a flag featuring a Union Jack?

Haiti has the only Latin American flag without a coat of arms on a pure horizontal or vertical bicolor — and no Latin American country uses the Union Jack. However, Guyana, though not always classified as part of Latin America (its official language is English), has a flag with a distinct green field and red triangle.

What is the difference between Latin America and South America?

South America is a continent defined by geography. Latin America is a cultural region that includes South America (minus Guyana, Suriname, and parts of northern Brazil depending on definition) plus Mexico, Central America, and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. The two terms overlap heavily but are not the same.
