How Many Flags Are There in the World?

There are 195 widely recognised sovereign countries — the 193 United Nations member states plus Vatican City and Palestine — and each has its own national flag. Once you add partially recognised states and dependent territories with their own flags, the total climbs past 250, which is the full set covered in the list below.

That makes "learn all the flags of the world" a big but very achievable goal. The secret is not brute memorisation but pattern recognition: most flags belong to a regional colour family, so learning the families first turns 250 individual flags into a handful of groups.

The Great Flag Families

Almost every world flag fits into one of a few regional patterns:

Pan-African (red, gold, green) — much of Africa, borrowed from Ethiopia.

Pan-Arab (red, white, black, green) — the Middle East and North Africa.

Pan-Slavic (red, white, blue) — Russia and much of Eastern Europe.

Nordic crosses — Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland.

Star and crescent — Muslim-majority nations from Turkey to Malaysia.

Gran Colombia (yellow, blue, red) — Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela.

Learn the six families and you can make an educated guess at a flag's continent before you even recognise the country.

Record-Breaking Flags to Know

A handful of flags are famous for being unique, and they make great anchor points:

Nepal — the only non-rectangular national flag, made of two stacked pennants.

Paraguay — the only flag with different emblems on the front and back.

Denmark — the oldest continuously used national flag (the Dannebrog, dated to 1219).

South Africa — the only six-colour national flag.

Jamaica — the only flag with no red, white, or blue.

Libya once had the only all-green flag in the world. Anchoring on these outliers gives you free points and a mental map of the extremes.

There are 195 widely recognised countries in the world, each with a national flag; including territories, the full list passes 250. The fastest way to learn them is by regional colour family — pan-African, pan-Arab, pan-Slavic, Nordic cross, star-and-crescent, and Gran Colombia. Nepal has the only non-rectangular flag, and Denmark's Dannebrog is the oldest still in use.

FAQ

How many flags are there in the world?

There are 195 widely recognised sovereign countries — the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine — each with a national flag. Including partially recognised states and dependent territories, the full list of flags rises to more than 250, all of which are covered here.

What is the fastest way to learn all the flags of the world?

Learn the flags by regional colour family rather than one at a time. Master the pan-African, pan-Arab, pan-Slavic, Nordic-cross, star-and-crescent, and Gran Colombia patterns, then drill the look-alikes within each group. Active recall — testing yourself with a timed quiz — is far more effective than re-reading a list.

Which country has the only non-rectangular flag?

Nepal is the only country in the world with a non-rectangular national flag. It is made of two stacked triangular pennants representing the Himalayas and the nation's two main religions, with a stylised sun and moon.

What is the oldest national flag in the world?

Denmark's flag, the Dannebrog, is the oldest continuously used national flag, traditionally dated to 1219. Its off-centre white cross on red became the model for the other Nordic cross flags.

Is the Flags of the World quiz free?

Yes — it runs free in your browser with no download or signup. Sign in with Google to save your score. For a faster arcade-style version, try the Guess the Flag game.
