How to Play the Capital City Quiz
- Pick a level. Easy uses famous countries, Difficult less-known ones, and So Difficult and Hell the rarest.
- A country name and its flag appear with four capital cities under them.
- Tap the right capital. There is no time limit, and the right answer is shown after every question.
- After 10 countries you see your score. Sign in with Google if you want to save it to the leaderboard.
What Makes It Different
- The flag is shown with every question, so you learn the country's flag and its capital together.
- It goes past the usual 195: 245 countries and territories, including capitals like Nuuk and Hamilton.
- Answer options come from the same level, so on the harder levels you pick between similar, lesser-known cities.
- Pair it with the reverse capital quiz to practise both directions: country to capital and capital to country.
Capital cities are the political, cultural and economic hearts of their countries. This capital quiz tests you on every capital city, from world-famous ones like London and Tokyo to lesser-known ones like Ouagadougou and Funafuti. Knowing capitals is one of the pillars of geography.
Why Learn Capital Cities?
Capitals are the cities you hear in the news, read about in history books and pass through when you travel. Knowing them helps you understand political geography: which cities hold power, where people cluster and how countries are organised.
Active recall is the fastest way to learn. Seeing a country and recalling its capital (or the reverse) builds a link that passive reading never can.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free capital cities quiz with no sign-up?
Yes. The DodoThinks Capital City Quiz is free, needs no account and has no limit on rounds. Sign in with Google only to save scores to the leaderboard.
How many capital cities are there?
There are 195 countries, so 195 capitals, although some countries have more than one. South Africa has three: Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. This quiz uses each country's main seat of government.
What is the hardest capital to remember?
The small, less-famous ones. Capitals like Port Vila (Vanuatu), Funafuti (Tuvalu) and Ngerulmud (Palau) rarely appear in the news. Learning them continent by continent helps.
Is there a reverse capital quiz?
Yes. In the reverse capital quiz you see the capital and pick the country. It trains the opposite direction of recall.
