How to Play the quiz
- Read the live clock strip for the time now in 17 cities, and click any country on the world map to see its time zones and its time right now.
- US time zones: a zone or a city is named, and you click the zone on the US map.
- World clock: "When it is 12:00 in London, what time is it in Tokyo?" Pick from four. The answers use today's daylight saving.
- Click a country: a standard offset like UTC+5:30 is named, and you click any country that keeps it.
What UTC is
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the time every clock zone is counted from. It replaced Greenwich Mean Time as the world standard and is kept by atomic clocks, but it is still the time on the Prime Meridian in London in winter. A zone is written as its difference from UTC: UTC−5 for New York's winter time, UTC+9 for Tokyo all year. In theory each zone is 15° of longitude wide, one hour of the Earth's turn; in practice the lines follow borders.
Half-hour and quarter-hour zones
Not every zone is a whole hour from UTC. India and Sri Lanka keep UTC+5:30, Iran UTC+3:30, Afghanistan UTC+4:30 and Myanmar UTC+6:30; in Canada, Newfoundland is UTC−3:30 and central Australia UTC+9:30. Nepal is UTC+5:45, and New Zealand's Chatham Islands UTC+12:45.
Countries with many time zones
Counting its overseas territories, France spans 12 time zones, more than any other country; Russia has 11 on its own land, from Kaliningrad (UTC+2) to Kamchatka (UTC+12), and the United States 11 counting its Pacific islands, six of them in the 50 states. China, as wide as the contiguous US, keeps a single zone, UTC+8 (Xinjiang also uses an unofficial UTC+6), and so does India.
Daylight saving time
In summer many countries move their clocks an hour forward. The United States and Canada do it from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and the European Union from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Arizona (apart from the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii never change, and most countries near the equator, in Asia and in Africa don't use daylight saving at all. In the southern hemisphere the summer clocks run from about October to April.
Countries With More Than One Time Zone
Standard offsets on each country's own land (overseas territories have their own entries), from the IANA time zone database.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many time zones are there in the world?
There are 24 hours, but about 38 different local times are in use, because of the half-hour and quarter-hour zones and the zones beyond UTC+12, such as Kiribati's UTC+14.
How many time zones does the United States have?
Six in the 50 states: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii–Aleutian. With Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and other islands it uses 9, and 11 counting uninhabited islands.
Which country has the most time zones?
France, with 12 counting its overseas territories. On one stretch of land, Russia has the most: 11.
Why does China have only one time zone?
Since 1949 the whole country keeps Beijing time, UTC+8, so in the far west the sun can rise as late as 10 in the morning in winter.
What is the difference between GMT and UTC?
For everyday use none: both are the time at the Prime Meridian. GMT is the old astronomical time of Greenwich; UTC is the modern standard kept by atomic clocks, and it is what time zones are written from.
Does Arizona change its clocks?
No. Most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) all year, so in summer it has the same time as California. The Navajo Nation in the north-east does use daylight saving.
