How to Play the Japan Prefecture Flags Quiz
- Famous: a flag is shown and you pick its prefecture from four. These are the prefectures most people know, like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.
- Look-alikes: only the white flags, and the wrong answers are white flags too.
- Pick the flag: a prefecture is named and you pick its flag from four pictures.
- All 47 shows every prefecture flag once.
- After a wrong answer the right prefecture shows with what sets its flag apart.
What Makes It Different
- All 47 flags on one page, region by region, with the English and Japanese names.
- A round only for the eleven white flags, the ones people mix up most.
- A line under every flag saying what is on it, so you know what to look for.
Japan is divided into 47 prefectures: Tokyo (a metropolis), Hokkaido, the two urban prefectures of Osaka and Kyoto, and 43 more. In Japanese they are called todōfuken, and in English people often call them states.
What the Prefecture Flags Have in Common
Almost every prefecture flag follows one pattern: a plain field in one colour with a symbol in the middle. The symbol is the prefecture’s emblem, in the style of a Japanese family crest (mon): simple, flat and easy to stamp or sew.
Many emblems are built from the prefecture’s own name. Kanagawa’s is the character 神 (kami), Gifu’s the character 岐 (gi), Iwate’s the character 岩 (iwa) and Fukushima’s the hiragana ふ (fu). Others show the land: Aomori draws the outline of the prefecture, and Shizuoka puts Mount Fuji inside its own outline.
The White Flags
Aomori, Saitama, Kanagawa, Toyama, Gifu, Nara, Wakayama, Nagasaki, Oita, Kagoshima and Okinawa all have a white field with one coloured emblem, so the colour of the field will not help you. Look at the emblem’s colour and shape instead: green for Aomori, Toyama and Gifu, red for Saitama, Kanagawa, Oita and Okinawa, blue for Wakayama and Nagasaki, dark red for Nara, and black and red for Kagoshima. The Look-alikes round asks only these.
Flags That Stand Out
Tokyo has a white sun with six rays on purple, a colour known as Edo purple. Hokkaido has a red and white seven-pointed star on dark navy. Ehime is the only flag with stripes, an orange band at the top and the bottom. Shizuoka shows Mount Fuji. Okinawa has a red ring around a white circle, which reads as a big O.
