How to Play Paint the Flag
- Pick a level. A country is named, and its flag appears with the colours replaced by shades of grey: one shade per part.
- Tap a colour in the palette, then tap a part of the flag to paint it. Every shape of one colour is one part, so the three white stripes of a flag fill together.
- When you are done, press Check. A flag counts when every part is right; any wrong part is outlined in red and painted the right colour.
- Flags with an emblem show it as an outline: you paint the field around it, not the emblem.
The levels
Stripes (47 flags) are only straight bands: France, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Indonesia. Crosses, triangles and stars (96) add other shapes: the Nordic crosses, the Czech triangle, the Japanese disc, the stars of China, Vietnam and the United States. With an emblem (39) have a coat of arms or a symbol, drawn as an outline: Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal.
Which flags are left out
The flags that can't be cut into a few clean parts: those with more than five colours or detailed pictures, and Nepal's, which is not a rectangle. Left out: Bhutan, Belize, Ecuador, Cambodia, Kiribati, Moldova, Nicaragua, Nepal, San Marino, South Sudan, Eswatini (Swaziland), South Africa.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I design my own flag?
Yes: the Flag Maker lets you start from a pattern or from any country's flag, choose the colours and a symbol, and download it as a PNG or SVG.
Why do some stripes fill together?
Each colour is one part. If a flag has two white stripes, painting one paints both, so a part is always one colour of the real flag.
Are the colours exact?
The palette uses each flag's own colours from the flag images on the site, so a right answer is exactly the real flag.
Is there a class mode?
Yes. Teachers can set any level as a class challenge, and every pupil gets the same flags.
