How to Name All 50 States

Go region by region. Racing around the map at random is how states get lost. Start in the Northeast and work through New England, then sweep down the East Coast, across the South, up through the Midwest and out to the West. The slots under the map show how many are left in each region.

Walk the borders. Once you have a state, name its neighbours. After Colorado come Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The map does the remembering for you.

Use the alphabet. Eight states start with M and eight with N, four each with A, I and W, and none at all with B, E, J, Q, X, Y or Z. If you are stuck on 47, run through the letters.

The States People Forget

The big states come first: California, Texas, Florida and New York are rarely missed. The ones that slip through are small or sit in the middle of the country with few famous cities. Delaware, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire hide in the crowded Northeast, and Nebraska, Kansas, the Dakotas, Idaho and Wyoming are easy to skip in the wide middle of the map. Alaska and Hawaii are drawn as insets, so they are out of sight unless you remember them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many states are there in the US?

There are 50 states. Washington, D.C. is a federal district, not a state, and Puerto Rico, Guam and the other territories are not states either, so none of them count in this quiz.

How does the US states quiz work?

Type a state and it turns green on the map the moment the name is complete, and the counter goes up. You do not need to press Enter, but Enter accepts a name with a small typo. There is no time limit: keep going until you have all 50 or press Give up to see the ones you missed.

Do abbreviations like TX count?

No, the quiz asks for the full names. Short forms such as N Carolina, S Dakota and W Virginia are accepted. To practise the two-letter codes, play the US state abbreviations quiz.

How many states do most people name?

Most people get 40 to 45 on a first try. The last few are almost always the small Northeastern states and the Plains and Mountain states in the middle of the map.

Which letters do no US states start with?

B, E, J, Q, X, Y and Z. M and N lead with eight states each.

Is the US states quiz free?

Yes. It runs free in your browser with no download and no sign up. Sign in with Google only if you want your score on the leaderboard.
