The Southeast runs from West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky in the north, through Tennessee and the Carolinas, down to Georgia and Florida, and west along the Gulf of Mexico to Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.
The Capitals That Catch People Out
Florida's capital is Tallahassee, not Miami or Orlando. Kentucky's is Frankfort, not Louisville. Louisiana's is Baton Rouge, not New Orleans.
The trickiest pair is Charleston and Columbia. Charleston is the capital of West Virginia, even though the more famous Charleston is in South Carolina. South Carolina's capital is Columbia.
Southeast or South?
School maps usually split the southern half of the country into a Southeast and a Southwest, and that is the grouping used here. The US Census Bureau has one big South region instead, with 16 states and Washington, D.C.: the 12 on this page plus Texas, Oklahoma, Delaware and Maryland.
