- The full list of states, abbreviations and capitals sits right under the game.
The Northeast is the smallest region by area and the most crowded on the map. Six New England states sit in the top corner, and New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland run down the Atlantic coast below them.
The Capitals That Catch People Out
Only two Northeast states have their biggest city as the capital: Boston in Massachusetts and Providence in Rhode Island. Everywhere else the capital is a smaller city.
New York's capital is Albany, not New York City. Pennsylvania's is Harrisburg, not Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. New Jersey's is Trenton, Maryland's is Annapolis, and Delaware's is Dover. In the north, Augusta (Maine), Concord (New Hampshire) and Montpelier (Vermont) are all small cities; Montpelier has the smallest population of any state capital in the country.
Is Maryland in the Northeast?
It depends who is counting. Most school lessons and maps put Delaware and Maryland in the Northeast, which gives 11 states, and that is what this quiz uses. The US Census Bureau counts only 9: the six New England states plus New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It puts Delaware and Maryland in the South.
