How to Play the quiz

  1. Before you start, tap any county to see its name, or press "Show names" to label them all.
  2. Pick a round: Biggest counties asks the 20 most populous first, All counties asks any of the 254, and Cities names one of 45 cities and you click its county.
  3. Counties are small on a phone: zoom in, or use the magnifier that opens when you tap a crowded spot.
  4. After each answer the right county lights up, so a mistake still teaches you where it is.

More counties than any other state

Texas has 254 counties, more than any other state; Georgia is second with 159. Many were drawn in the 1800s so that anyone could ride to the county seat and back in a day, which is why the counties of the plains are small, similar squares. Brewster County, in the Big Bend, is the largest, bigger than Connecticut. Rockwall County, near Dallas, is the smallest.

Where Texans live

Harris County (Houston) has about 4.7 million people, more than half the states. Together with Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar and Travis counties, it holds more than two in every five Texans. At the other end, Loving County in West Texas had 64 people in 2020, the fewest of any county in the United States.
