Lookalike Flags Quiz

Ten rounds, a different pair each time. The last rounds show the flags smaller, the way they look on a phone.

Questions people ask

Which two flags look the most alike?

Chad and Romania. Both are blue, yellow and red upright stripes in the same order and shape; only Chad's darker blue tells them apart. Indonesia and Monaco come close: both are red over white, and only the shape differs.

Which flags do people mix up most?

In our flag games, Australia and New Zealand by far (17 swaps so far), then Indonesia and Poland (9) and the Nordic crosses, above all Denmark and Sweden (6).

Which flag was changed because it looked like another?

Liechtenstein's. At the 1936 Olympic Games its flag turned out to be the same as Haiti's, blue over red, so in 1937 Liechtenstein added a gold crown.

How do you tell lookalike flags apart?

Look for the one detail that differs: the shade of a colour (Chad and Romania), the order of the stripes (Ireland and Ivory Coast, Bulgaria and Hungary), an emblem (Senegalโ€™s star, Ecuadorโ€™s coat of arms) or the shape (Indonesia and Monaco). Every page here names that detail.
