Why they look alike
Senegal and Mali were briefly one country, the Mali Federation, in 1959 and 1960. Their flags share the pan-African colours green, yellow and red, used by many African countries after Ghana and Ethiopia. Mali removed a small figure from the middle of its flag in 1961, which left the three stripes on their own.
How to tell them apart
Look at the middle. A star means Senegal, no star means Mali.
