Why they look alike
The Dutch red, white and blue goes back to the 17th century, when it replaced an older orange, white and blue. Luxembourg's colours come from its own coat of arms, a red lion on blue and white stripes, and its flag was set down in law in 1972. The two countries also share a history: the Dutch king was Grand Duke of Luxembourg until 1890.
How to tell them apart
Look at the blue. If it is light, like a summer sky, it is Luxembourg. If it is deep and dark, it is the Netherlands.
