How to Play the China Map Quiz

  1. Before you start, tap any region to see its name, or press "Show names" to label them all.
  2. Pick a round: Provinces names each region, Capitals names a provincial capital and you click its province, and Whole map asks all of them.
  3. Click the right region. Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau are small: zoom in, or use the magnifier that opens when you tap a crowded spot.
  4. After each answer the right region lights up, so a mistake still teaches you where it is.

Provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities

China has 22 provinces that it governs, 5 autonomous regions with large ethnic minorities (Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi and Ningxia), and 4 municipalities run directly by the central government: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing. Hong Kong and Macau are special administrative regions with their own laws and currencies. China also claims Taiwan as a province, but Taiwan is governed separately and is shown in grey, not asked.

Shanxi or Shaanxi?

The two names differ by one letter in English. Shanxi (capital Taiyuan) is the eastern one, next to Hebei. Shaanxi (capital Xi'an, home of the Terracotta Army) lies to its west, across the Yellow River. The extra a marks a different tone in Chinese.

The biggest and the busiest

Xinjiang in the far west is the largest region, about a sixth of China, followed by Tibet and Inner Mongolia. Guangdong, around Guangzhou and Shenzhen, has the most people, about 126 million, followed by Shandong and Henan with about 100 million each.
