Five Ways to Practise a Map

Each quiz above is labelled with its format. They test your memory in different ways, so mix them.

Click the map
A place is named and you click it on a blank map. The classic map quiz, and the best way to learn where things are.
Type from memory
No clues at all. Type every country you can remember and watch each one appear on a 3D globe.
Name the shape
You see a country outline on its own, with no neighbours or coastline around it, and name the country.
Study, then quiz
A labelled reference map and full list to learn from first, followed by a timed quiz on the same places.
Printable
Blank and labelled maps to print or save as PDF, for fill-in practice, homework and classroom tests.

How to Learn a Map Fast

Knowing where the world's countries are is less about talent than about how you practise. These six habits make any map stick, whether it is Africa, the US states or the whole world.

1. Learn in small chunks

Nobody memorises 195 countries in one sitting. Take one region of five to ten countries, learn it until you can place every one, then move on. Quizzing one continent at a time does this for you.

2. Anchor on the big shapes

Start with the largest countries and the most recognisable coastlines, like Brazil, India, Italy or Egypt. Their neighbours are much easier to place once you know what they sit next to.

3. Test yourself early

Trying to recall where a country is teaches you far more than looking at a labelled map. Take the quiz before you feel ready. The mistakes show you exactly what to study next.

4. Space out your practice

Short sessions over several days beat one long session. A five-minute map quiz each day keeps what you learned yesterday from fading.

5. Switch formats

Clicking a country, typing its name and recognising its outline use memory in different ways. Mixing them builds knowledge that holds up when the question changes.

6. Fill in a blank map

When the quizzes feel easy, print a blank map and label it from memory. Drawing from nothing is the hardest test, and the best proof you really know the map.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a map quiz?+

A map quiz shows you a map and asks you to find places on it. On DodoThinks you click the place that is named, type names from memory onto a globe, or name a country from its outline. Because you have to recall each answer instead of just reading it, it is one of the fastest ways to learn where countries are.

Are these map quizzes free?+

Yes. Every map quiz on DodoThinks is free and runs in your browser, with no download and no sign-up. Sign in with Google only if you want to save your scores and appear on the leaderboard.

Do the map quizzes work on phones and tablets?+

Yes. The quizzes work with touch as well as a mouse, so you can play on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

Which map quiz should a beginner start with?+

Start with Continents and Oceans, then the map of the continent you know best, then the world map. Once you can place most countries, try naming all 195 from memory in the Countries of the World quiz.

Why does the world map quiz have fewer than 195 countries?+

Some countries, such as small island nations and European microstates, are too small to click on a map of the whole world. Many of them appear on the continent maps, and all 195 count in the Countries of the World quiz, where you type the names instead of clicking.

Can teachers use these map quizzes in class?+

Yes. Students can play without creating accounts, and the printable blank maps work as worksheets or quick tests on paper.

How is DodoThinks different from Seterra?+

Both are free map quiz sites with click-the-map quizzes and printable maps. Seterra has more maps of states and provinces. DodoThinks adds a type-from-memory globe challenge, country shapes, flag and capital games, and a global leaderboard.
