About the Map of Oceania
Oceania has 14 countries. Australia covers most of the land, followed by Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. The other 11 are island nations spread across the Pacific Ocean, many of them made of dozens of small islands, which is why they look like scattered dots on the map. Nauru is the smallest, at about 21 square kilometres.
Tips for Learning the Countries
- Learn the Pacific islands in three groups: Melanesia (Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji), Micronesia (Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Kiribati) and Polynesia (Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu).
- Going east from Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji follow one another in an arc.
- Kiribati is spread so widely that it is the only country with islands in all four hemispheres.
How to Use These Maps
- Study: print the blank map and label it from memory, then check it against the map with names.
- Flags: the flag map fills every country with its own flag, so flags and places stick together. It also makes a bright poster.
