About the Map of South America

South America has 12 countries. Brazil alone covers almost half of the continent and borders every other country except Chile and Ecuador. Chile is the long, narrow strip along the Pacific coast, and Bolivia and Paraguay are the two countries with no coastline. French Guiana, on the north coast, is part of France, so it is not one of the 12.

Tips for Learning the Countries

  • Go around the coast clockwise from the north: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, then back up the Pacific with Chile, Peru and Ecuador.
  • Guyana and Suriname are the pair players mix up most. Guyana is the one next to Venezuela.
  • The two landlocked countries sit side by side in the middle: Bolivia in the Andes and Paraguay to its southeast.
