How to Play the quiz

  1. Click any river, mountain range, desert, sea or lake to see its name before you start.
  2. Pick a round: Rivers (14), Mountains & deserts (15) or Seas & lakes (21). A name appears and you click it on the map. Whole map asks all 50 once each.
  3. Rivers are thin lines, so a click on or just beside the line counts. On a phone, a tap where several features meet opens a magnifier; tap the right one inside it.
  4. After every answer the right place turns green, so a wrong click still shows you where it is.

The roof of the world

The Himalayas hold the world's highest peaks, with Everest (8,849 m) on the border of Nepal and China. To the north west they meet the Karakoram (K2, 8,611 m), the Hindu Kush and the Tian Shan; to the north, the Kunlun edge the high Plateau of Tibet. The Ural Mountains and the Caucasus are the usual border with Europe.

Deserts, seas and lakes

The Gobi spreads over Mongolia and northern China, the Taklamakan fills the Tarim Basin, and the Thar lies between India and Pakistan. The Caspian Sea is the largest lake on Earth, Lake Baikal the deepest and oldest, and the Aral Sea has shrunk to a fraction of its size since its rivers were taken for farming.

The Rivers in the Quiz, Longest First

Lengths are of the main river, rounded to 10 km; sources give slightly different figures.
