How to Play the quiz
- Click any river, mountain range or sea to see its name before you start.
- Pick a round: Rivers (20), Mountains (9) or Seas (13). A name appears and you click it on the map. Whole map asks all 42 once each.
- Rivers are thin lines, so a click on or just beside the line counts. On a phone, a tap where several rivers run close together opens a magnifier; tap the river inside it.
- After every answer the right place turns green, so a wrong click still shows you where it is.
Europe is a small continent with a lot of coast and a few great rivers. The longest ones are in the east, on the wide plain of Russia and Ukraine; the west has shorter rivers between mountain ranges, most of them running to the Atlantic, the North Sea or the Mediterranean.
Europe's Mountain Ranges
The Alps arc across France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovenia, with Mont Blanc (about 4,806 m) at the top. The Caucasus, between the Black and Caspian Seas, is higher: Elbrus reaches 5,642 m and is usually counted as Europe's highest mountain. The Pyrenees separate Spain and France (Aneto, 3,404 m). The Carpathians curve through Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania (Gerlachovský štít, 2,655 m). The Scandinavian Mountains run the length of Norway (Galdhøpiggen, 2,469 m). The Apennines form the spine of Italy (Corno Grande, 2,912 m), the Dinaric Alps follow the Adriatic coast down to Albania (Maja Jezercë, 2,694 m), and the Balkan Mountains cross Bulgaria (Botev, 2,376 m) and gave the Balkans their name. The Urals are old and low (Narodnaya, 1,895 m) but long: they are the usual line between Europe and Asia.
The Seas Around Europe
The Baltic Sea is almost closed in by Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Denmark. The North Sea lies between Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France, joined to the Atlantic by the English Channel between England and France. Further north are the Norwegian Sea off Norway and the Barents Sea off northern Norway and Russia. The Bay of Biscay is the Atlantic's corner between France and Spain. The Mediterranean Sea touches 21 countries; its arms on Europe's side are the Tyrrhenian Sea west of Italy, the Adriatic between Italy and the Balkans, the Ionian Sea between southern Italy and Greece, and the Aegean between Greece and Turkey. The Black Sea is bordered by Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia and Georgia. The Caspian Sea is really the world's largest lake, with no outlet to the ocean.
Rivers That Cross Borders
The Danube flows through or along ten countries, more than any other river in the world: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine, passing four capitals on the way (Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade). The Rhine starts in the Swiss Alps and forms parts of the borders of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and France before it reaches the Netherlands. The Volga, Europe's longest river, never leaves Russia, and the Thames, the shortest here, never leaves England.
The Rivers in the Quiz, Longest First
Lengths are of the main river, rounded to 10 km. Sources give slightly different figures, and a river measured from its farthest source (the Don from the Voronezh, the Oder from the Warta) comes out longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Volga, about 3,530 km. It flows through Russia from the Valdai Hills, northwest of Moscow, to the Caspian Sea. The Danube, about 2,850 km, is second and the longest in the European Union.
What is the highest mountain in Europe?
Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus, 5,642 m, if the Caucasus counts as Europe, as it usually does. Otherwise it is Mont Blanc in the Alps, about 4,806 m, on the border of France and Italy.
Which mountains separate Europe and Asia?
The Ural Mountains, in Russia. Further south the usual line follows the Ural River to the Caspian Sea, then runs west to the Black Sea along the Caucasus.

What does a physical map show?
The land itself rather than countries: rivers, mountains, plains and seas. This one shows the borders faintly for reference, and the quiz asks for the natural features.
Is the quiz free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, on a phone or a computer, with no download and no account.
