How to Play Rank the Countries

  1. Pick a topic, or the Daily board.
  2. Put the five cards in order, biggest first: drag a card to its place, or tap one card and then another to swap them.
  3. Press Lock in. Each card shows its real number and turns green if it is in the right place.
  4. A round is five boards. Your score is how many cards you placed right, out of 25.

What Makes It Different

  • Five at once is much harder than two: you have to know roughly how big each country is, not just which of two is bigger.
  • Real, current numbers, shown after every board: population and GDP from the World Bank, area from an open dataset.
  • Two countries that are almost the same size never share a board, so every order can be worked out.

Which has more people, Nigeria or Russia? Is Mongolia bigger than Peru? Rank the Countries puts five countries side by side and asks you to order them. It is a quick way to build a feel for the size of the world: how many people live where, how big each country really is, and which economies dwarf the rest.

Where the Numbers Come From

Population is the World Bank's latest total population (indicator SP.POP.TOTL), the same figures as the country pages, last updated on 18 September 2026.

Area is each country's total area in square kilometres, from the open mledoze/countries dataset: Russia is the largest at about 17.1 million kmยฒ, and Vatican City the smallest at 0.44 kmยฒ.

Economy is gross domestic product in current US dollars, from the World Bank (indicator NY.GDP.MKTP.CD), using only figures from 2023 or later; the year shows with each number. The largest is the United States at about $30.8 trillion (2025), and the smallest Tuvalu at about $57 million.

Distance from you is the straight-line (great-circle) distance from the middle of your country, found from your device's time zone, to the middle of each country. If your time zone gives no country, the topic stays off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a round scored?

Each board has five countries, and you score a point for every card in the right place, so a round of five boards is out of 25. Signed in, the score counts on the leaderboard.

What is the Daily board?

The same five countries for every player each day, on population, area or GDP in turn. You get one try, a row of green and red squares to share, and a new board at midnight.

Can I play without dragging?

Yes. Tap one card and then another to swap them; on a keyboard, the arrow keys move the focused card up or down.

Why does the GDP topic leave some countries out?

Only countries with a World Bank GDP figure from 2023 or later are used, so no board compares a current economy with one measured years ago. North Korea and Vatican City have no figure at all.
