What the points mean
Bahrain's five points stand for the five pillars of Islam. Qatar's nine points are often said to mark Qatar as the ninth member of the reconciled emirates of the Persian Gulf. Qatar's flag is the only national flag more than twice as long as it is tall.
How to tell them apart
Count the points or look at the colour. Dark maroon and many points is Qatar; bright red and five points is Bahrain.
