The Southwest is the smallest region by number of states, only four, but Texas alone is bigger than any other state in the lower 48. Arizona and New Mexico share the desert border with Mexico, and Oklahoma sits on top of Texas.
Capitals Worth Knowing
Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, has more people than any other state capital in the country. Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, is the oldest state capital, founded in 1610, and the highest, at about 7,000 feet. Texas's capital is Austin, not Houston or Dallas, and Oklahoma's is Oklahoma City.
Which States Are in the Southwest?
There is no single official answer. Most school maps use these four states, and that is what the quiz uses. Some add Nevada, Utah, Colorado or California. The US Census Bureau has no Southwest region at all: it puts Arizona and New Mexico in the West and Texas and Oklahoma in the South.
