How to Play the Russia Map Quiz

  1. Before you start, tap any region to see its name, or press "Show names" to label them all.
  2. Pick a round: Regions names each subject (Easy starts with the best known), Capitals names a capital such as Kazan and you click its region, and Whole map asks all 83.
  3. The small republics of the North Caucasus and the regions around Moscow are crowded: zoom in, or use the magnifier that opens when you tap there.
  4. After each answer the right region lights up, so a mistake still teaches you where it is.

Six kinds of federal subject

Russia's subjects come in six kinds: 21 republics, home to non-Russian peoples, with their own constitutions and often a second official language (Tatarstan, Chechnya, Sakha); 9 krais and 46 oblasts, the ordinary regions; 2 federal cities, Moscow and Saint Petersburg; 1 autonomous oblast, the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Far East; and 4 autonomous okrugs in the north.

Why 83 and not 89

Russia's constitution lists 89 subjects. The extra six are Crimea and Sevastopol, annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and four Ukrainian regions claimed in 2022. Most countries do not recognise these annexations, so this map shows the 83 subjects inside Russia's internationally recognised borders.

Biggest and busiest

Sakha (Yakutia) is the largest subject, at 3.1 million km² bigger than Argentina, with only about a million people. Moscow has the most people, about 13 million, and Moscow Oblast around it another 8 million. Most Russians live west of the Ural Mountains, in European Russia.
