How to Play Street View Country Guess

  1. Pick a level. Easy uses well-known countries, Difficult any country with Street View, and Neighbours puts four countries from the same part of the world side by side.
  2. A real street appears. Drag to look around in 360° and click the arrows on the road to move along it.
  3. Read the clues: the side of the road people drive on, the writing on signs, road markings, plants and houses. Then pick one of the four countries.
  4. See the answer, open the place on Google Maps if you are curious, and press Next. After 10 places you get your score.

What Makes It Different

  • Four answers instead of a blank world map, so a round takes a minute and plays well on a phone.
  • Real 360° street photos shared by people around the world, not pictures picked to be easy: you look around and move along the road.
  • No timer and no account. Take as long as you like on each place.
  • After each answer you can open the exact spot on Google Maps and see where you were.

Every street on Earth gives its country away if you know where to look. This game drops you into a real place in a 360° street photo: look around, read the road, the signs and the landscape, and choose the country from four. It trains the same eye that top geography players use, one street at a time.

Clues That Give a Country Away

Driving side: cars on the left point to the UK, Ireland, Japan, South Asia, much of Southern and East Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Writing: Cyrillic means Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia and their neighbours; Thai, Khmer, Hebrew, Greek and Korean each narrow it to one country.

Road lines: a yellow centre line is common in the Americas, while most of Europe uses white.

Landscape: red soil suggests Brazil, central Africa or Australia; birches and lakes, the Nordic countries; terraced hills and rice fields, Southeast Asia.

Why Some Countries Are Missing

The photos come from Mapillary, where people around the world share street photos under an open licence, and each photo credits the person who took it. Countries where nobody has shared 360° photos yet are not in the game. Every place is checked before it goes in: it has to be a 360° photo, taken in recent years, inside the right country. New places are added as people share more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this game free?

Yes. It is free with no sign up and no limit on games. Sign in with Google only if you want your scores on the leaderboard.

How does Street View Country Guess work?

You see a real street in a 360° photo. Drag to look around, click the arrows to move along the road, then pick the country from four answers. A game is 10 places.

Where do the photos come from?

From Mapillary, where people around the world share street-level photos under an open licence (CC BY-SA). The name of the person who took each photo is shown in the corner.

Is there a time limit?

No. Look around as long as you like on every place.

Can I turn the music off?

Yes. The music button at the top of the game turns the music and sounds on or off, and the game remembers your choice.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On a phone the street fills the screen, you drag with one finger to look around, and the four answers sit under it.

Why is my country not in the game?

Only countries with recent 360° street photos are included. As people share more, more countries join the game.
