Counties of England Map Quiz at a Glance

England has 48 ceremonial counties, the counties on most maps of England. The Counties of England Map Quiz is a free game from DodoThinks: a county is named and you click it on a blank map, from Cornwall to Northumberland. A second round names a town instead (Reading, Ipswich, Shrewsbury), and a Whole map round asks all 48. The full list with regions, population and area is below the map. No sign-up.

How to Play the Counties of England Map Quiz

  1. Before you start, tap any county to see its name, or press "Show names" to label them all.
  2. Pick a round: Counties names each county, Towns names a town in one (43 of them), and Whole map asks all 48 once.
  3. Click the right county. The City of London and Bristol are tiny, so they have a ring around them that counts as a click.
  4. After each answer the right county lights up, so a mistake still teaches you where it is.

How many counties are there in England?

Most maps of England show the 48 ceremonial counties, the areas with a Lord-Lieutenant, set in 1997. Six of them, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, the West Midlands and West Yorkshire, are metropolitan counties made in 1974 around big cities. Greater London dates from 1965, and Bristol and the City of London are counties of their own.

The number depends on what you count. England's 39 historic counties, like Middlesex and Westmorland, are older and still used by some people. For local government, many counties are now split into unitary authorities, so the councils do not match the map.
