Learn the Asia Map by Region

Asia is vast, so learn it in five regions rather than all at once:

The Middle East (West Asia): Turkey, the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan), Iraq, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf states.

Central Asia: the five "stans": Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

South Asia: India at the centre, ringed by Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

East Asia: China, Mongolia, the Koreas, Japan and Taiwan.

Southeast Asia: the mainland (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) and the maritime nations (Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Timor-Leste).

The Countries People Confuse

Most Asia map mistakes cluster in three places:

The five "stans": the Central Asian republics sit together in one block, making them the hardest group to tell apart.

The Gulf states: Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and their neighbours are small and packed around the Persian Gulf.

Mainland Southeast Asia: Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand are easy to swap. Anchor on the giants (China, India and Japan) and work outward.

Countries in Two Continents

A few countries cross the line between Asia and another continent. Russia is mostly in Asia by area but has most of its people in Europe, so this map leaves it out. Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia straddle Asia and Europe and are on the map, and Egypt reaches into Asia through the Sinai Peninsula. Three countries are too small to click at this scale and are not asked: Bahrain, the Maldives and Singapore. Cyprus, an island usually counted in Asia, is on the Europe map instead.

Asia has 48 countries, second only to Africa. The giants (China, India and the Asian part of Russia) are easy anchors, while the hardest to place are the five Central Asian "stans", the small Gulf states and mainland Southeast Asia. China is the largest country entirely in Asia and the Maldives the smallest. Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Egypt lie partly in Asia and partly in another continent.

Quiz tip: Central Asia's five "stans" (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) are the most swapped, along with the small states of the Persian Gulf.
