US State Flags Quiz at a Glance
Every one of the 50 US states has its own flag. Some are famous at a glance, like the Texas Lone Star or the California bear, but many are a state seal on a plain blue field and easy to mix up. This free quiz shows a flag and asks for the state, sets 18 look-alikes against each other, and asks you to pick the flag for a state.

How to Play the US State Flags Quiz
- Flags: a flag is shown and you pick its state from four. These are the flags with their own design.
- Look-alikes: only the seal flags, and the wrong answers are seal flags too.
- Pick the flag: a state is named and you pick its flag from four pictures.
- All 50 shows every state flag once.
- After a wrong answer the right state shows with what sets its flag apart.
What Makes It Different
- All 50 flags on one page, A to Z, with the name and what is on each.
- A round only for the blue seal flags, the part everyone gets wrong.
- The 2024 flags of Minnesota and Utah and the 2021 flag of Mississippi.
A state flag flies next to the US flag on government buildings, schools and courthouses. Most were adopted between 1890 and 1930, and many simply put the state seal on a blue field.
The Flags That Look Alike
Flag designers call them “seals on a bedsheet”: a state seal or coat of arms in the middle of a plain field. Connecticut, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin all follow it. Every flag in the grid above says what to look for, and the Look-alikes round asks only these.
Flags That Stand Out
Ohio is the only state flag that is not a rectangle: a swallowtail with 17 stars, because Ohio was the 17th state. Hawaii is the only one with another country’s flag on it, the British Union Jack. Oregon is the only one with a different picture on each side: the back shows a beaver. Washington is the only green one and the only one with a president, George Washington. Alaska’s Big Dipper was drawn by a 13 year old, Benny Benson, and chosen in 1927.
