The Capital Cities People Get Wrong Most (and What They Pick Instead)
October 26, 2026 ยท 4 min read
Capitals look like the easiest part of geography: one country, one city, learn the pair. Our players do well on them. In the capital cities quiz, where you see a country and pick its capital from four options, players got 82% right across 2,643 answers. In the European capitals quiz, 84% across 1,982 answers.
But the capitals people miss are not the ones you might expect. They are not in faraway places. Most of them are in Europe.
The capitals people get wrong most
From the main capital quiz, counting only countries asked at least 12 times:
| Country | Capital | Right |
|---|---|---|
| Serbia | Belgrade | 63% |
| Philippines | Manila | 69% |
| New Zealand | Wellington | 69% |
| Slovenia | Ljubljana | 71% |
| Denmark | Copenhagen | 71% |
| Latvia | Riga | 71% |
| Norway | Oslo | 73% |
| Switzerland | Bern | 74% |
| Liechtenstein | Vaduz | 74% |
| Montenegro | Podgorica | 74% |
| Thailand | Bangkok | 74% |
| North Macedonia | Skopje | 75% |
New Zealand and the Philippines are classic traps: many people answer Auckland or Cebu because those cities are better known. Switzerland is a similar trap; Zurich and Geneva are bigger and more famous than Bern.
The rest of the list is Europe: the Balkans, the Baltics and Scandinavia.
In the European capitals quiz
| Country | Capital | Right |
|---|---|---|
| Slovenia | Ljubljana | 58% |
| Lithuania | Vilnius | 58% |
| Montenegro | Podgorica | 60% |
| Kosovo | Pristina | 61% |
| Czechia | Prague | 63% |
| Ireland | Dublin | 64% |
| ร land Islands | Mariehamn | 66% |
| Faroe Islands | Tรณrshavn | 68% |
| Isle of Man | Douglas | 68% |
| Latvia | Riga | 70% |
| Belarus | Minsk | 70% |
| Cyprus | Nicosia | 72% |
Five capitals were never missed in this quiz: London, Madrid, Paris, Luxembourg and Lisbon.
Prague and Dublin are a surprise on this list. Both are famous cities that most people know. They show that a capital can be well known and still be missed when three other capitals from the same region sit next to it on the screen.
What people pick instead
The wrong answers show the patterns.
| Country | Picked the capital of | Times |
|---|---|---|
| Switzerland | Sweden (Stockholm) | 5 |
| Serbia | Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo) | 3 |
| Norway | Denmark (Copenhagen) | 3 |
| North Macedonia | Montenegro (Podgorica) | 2 |
| Slovakia | Slovenia (Ljubljana) | 2 |
Switzerland and Sweden
The most common mistake in our capital quiz is picking Stockholm for Switzerland. The names start the same way, and when you are answering quickly, Swiss and Swedish are easy to swap. Bern is the Swiss capital. Stockholm is Sweden's.
Slovakia and Slovenia
The country names are only one letter group apart, so the capitals get swapped too. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia; it sits on the Danube, right where Slovakia meets Austria and Hungary. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, the small country between Italy, Austria and Croatia.
Neighbours in the Balkans and Scandinavia
Serbia for Sarajevo, North Macedonia for Podgorica, Norway for Copenhagen: these are all next-door countries. When people half-remember a capital, they pick one from the right region but the wrong country.
How to remember the hard ones
- Belgrade (Serbia): "Belgrade" means "white city". It sits where the Sava river meets the Danube.
- Ljubljana (Slovenia): the name sounds like "lyoo-BLYAH-nah". Link the "l" sounds: Slovenia, Ljubljana.
- Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn: the Baltic capitals from south to north. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia.
- Podgorica (Montenegro), Skopje (North Macedonia), Pristina (Kosovo): three small Balkan capitals that sit close together. Learn them with the map: find the countries first, then their capitals.
- Wellington (New Zealand), Canberra (Australia), Bern (Switzerland), Ottawa (Canada): the "not the biggest city" club. If you are unsure, the famous city is probably the trap.
Practise
Start with the European capitals quiz, since that is where most mistakes happen, then move on to the world capitals quiz, which has four difficulty levels. There are also capital quizzes for Asia, Africa and South America.
About this data
These numbers come from 4,625 answers in the capital quizzes on DodoThinks between 1 October and 26 October 2026. Each question shows four options, so "what people pick instead" only counts capitals that were on the screen. Countries with fewer than 12 answers are left out.
