The 14 Czech Regions: Which Kraje Players Mix Up
October 26, 2026 · 3 min read
Czechia is divided into 14 regions, or kraje, including the capital Prague. Czech pupils learn them on a blank map (slepá mapa), and our Czech regions map game works the same way: a region is named and you click it.
Since early October 2026, players have answered 533 questions on it, with only 59% right. For a map with 14 regions, that is low. Italy's map, with 20 regions, scores 80%.

Why it is hard
Most Czech regions are named after their capital city, so if you do not know where the city is, the name gives you no clue. And they come in groups of similar shapes: a row along the northern border, and a cluster in Moravia in the east.
The northern row
Three of the four hardest regions, Ústecký, Liberecký and Královéhradecký, sit in a row along the northern border with Germany and Poland. The full row, from west to east:
- Karlovarský (Karlovy Vary), the far west
- Ústecký (Ústí nad Labem), along the Elbe
- Liberecký (Liberec), the smallest after Prague
- Královéhradecký (Hradec Králové), the north-east
Below Královéhradecký is Pardubický (Pardubice). Most wrong clicks in this group are on the next region along:
| Asked for | Clicked instead | Times |
|---|---|---|
| Ústecký | Liberecký | 10 |
| Karlovarský | Ústecký | 7 |
| Královéhradecký | Pardubický | 5 |
| Královéhradecký | Liberecký | 5 |
| Liberecký | Ústecký | 4 |
The pair to watch is Hradec Králové and Pardubice: two neighbouring regions whose capitals are only about 20 kilometres apart. Hradec Králové is the northern one, on the Polish border. Pardubice is the southern one.
Moravia
The other cluster is in the east, in Moravia.
| Asked for | Clicked instead | Times |
|---|---|---|
| Moravskoslezský | Olomoucký | 6 |
| Zlínský | Jihomoravský | 4 |
| Vysočina | Jihomoravský | 4 |
| Olomoucký | Zlínský | 4 |
A layout to remember:
- Moravskoslezský (Ostrava) is the far east, bordering Poland and Slovakia.
- Olomoucký is the long region to its west, stretching from the Polish border down towards Zlín.
- Zlínský is in the south-east, on the Slovak border.
- Jihomoravský (Brno) is the south, on the Austrian border.
- Vysočina (Jihlava) sits between Bohemia and Moravia, in the middle of the country.
Prague and Central Bohemia
Prague is the easiest region (82%): it is the small one in the middle. The few misses went to Středočeský kraj, the Central Bohemian Region, which surrounds Prague completely.
How to learn all 14
- Prague and Central Bohemia in the middle.
- The northern row, west to east: Karlovy Vary, Ústí, Liberec, Hradec Králové.
- The west and south of Bohemia: Plzeň and South Bohemia, with Pardubice in the east.
- Vysočina in the centre.
- Moravia: South Moravia, Zlín, Olomouc, Moravia-Silesia.
Then play the Czech regions game. It also has a round with the regional capitals (krajská města). The page is in Czech, but you only need to click the map.
