#mexico#states#maps#data

Mexico has 31 states plus Mexico City, 32 federal entities in all. Our Mexican states map quiz names one and you click it on a blank map. It is one of the most played map games on DodoThinks, with 3,214 answers since late September 2026 and 69% right overall.

Every state has been asked roughly 100 times, which makes this one of our most reliable maps.

The middle of Mexico

The hardest part of the map is the cluster of small states around Mexico City. Here is the layout:

  • Mexico City (CDMX) is the small entity in the centre.
  • The State of Mexico (Edomex) wraps around it on the west, north and east. Twelve players clicked it when asked for Mexico City.
  • Hidalgo is north of the State of Mexico.
  • Morelos is south of Mexico City.
  • Tlaxcala, the smallest state in Mexico, is to the east, almost surrounded by Puebla.

Hidalgo and Morelos were mixed up 14 times, in both directions. They are similar in size, and both border the State of Mexico, just on opposite sides. Hidalgo is the one to the north. Morelos is the one to the south.

Querétaro

The hardest state on our map. Querétaro is a small state in the Bajío region, north-west of Hidalgo. Its neighbours are Guanajuato to the west, San Luis Potosí to the north, Hidalgo to the east, and the State of Mexico and Michoacán to the south. If you can find Guanajuato, Querétaro is right next to it.

The two Bajas

The peninsula in the north-west is two states. Baja California is the northern half, on the US border, with Tijuana and Mexicali. Baja California Sur ("south") is the southern half, with La Paz and Los Cabos.

The south: Pacific coast and Gulf coast

On the Pacific side, from north-west to south-east: Colima (tiny), Michoacán, Guerrero (with Acapulco), Oaxaca, then Chiapas, which borders Guatemala. Players often click the next state along this coast, so learning the order fixes most mistakes.

On the Gulf side, Veracruz is the long state running down the coast. Tabasco is the smaller state at its south-eastern end, between Veracruz and Campeche. Nine players clicked Veracruz instead of Tabasco.

The Yucatán Peninsula

Three states share the peninsula: Yucatán in the north, Campeche on the west side, and Quintana Roo on the Caribbean coast, with Cancún. Campeche is the most often missed of the three.

How to learn all 32

  1. The north first. From west to east: Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas. These are big and easy.
  2. The Pacific coast, in order from Sinaloa down to Chiapas.
  3. The Gulf coast: Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, then the Yucatán Peninsula.
  4. The centre last. Learn it as one puzzle around Mexico City.

Then play the Mexican states map quiz. If you prefer Spanish, the same game is available as Estados de México.
