Poland's 16 Voivodeships: Lubuskie or Lubelskie?
October 26, 2026 · 3 min read
Poland is divided into 16 voivodeships (województwa), a system that dates from 1999. Our voivodeships map quiz names one and you click it on a blank map of Poland. Players have answered 2,252 questions on it since early October 2026, with 70% right.
What makes this map interesting is that most mistakes come from the names, not the shapes.
All 16 voivodeships, hardest first
Each voivodeship was asked between 132 and 148 times.
| Voivodeship | Capital | Found |
|---|---|---|
| Małopolskie | Kraków | 49% |
| Kujawsko-pomorskie | Bydgoszcz and Toruń | 61% |
| Warmińsko-mazurskie | Olsztyn | 62% |
| Świętokrzyskie | Kielce | 64% |
| Dolnośląskie | Wrocław | 64% |
| Podkarpackie | Rzeszów | 65% |
| Opolskie | Opole | 69% |
| Lubuskie | Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra | 69% |
| Śląskie | Katowice | 70% |
| Lubelskie | Lublin | 73% |
| Wielkopolskie | Poznań | 73% |
| Podlaskie | Białystok | 73% |
| Pomorskie | Gdańsk | 77% |
| Zachodniopomorskie | Szczecin | 80% |
| Mazowieckie | Warsaw | 81% |
| Łódzkie | Łódź | 84% |
Łódzkie, right in the centre, is the easiest. Małopolskie, home of Kraków, is the hardest, which surprised us, since Kraków is one of the best-known cities in Poland.

Lubuskie and Lubelskie
The most common mistake, exactly 17 times in each direction. The names differ by two letters, but the voivodeships are at opposite ends of Poland:
- Lubuskie is in the far west, on the German border, with Zielona Góra and Gorzów Wielkopolski.
- Lubelskie is in the far east, on the Ukrainian and Belarusian border, with Lublin.
A memory hook: Lubelskie has Lublin in its name. Lubuskie does not have a city called "Lubus".
Lesser, Greater and Lower
Three voivodeships are named after historic regions with a size or position word:
- Małopolskie is "Lesser Poland", in the south, with Kraków.
- Wielkopolskie is "Greater Poland", in the west-centre, with Poznań.
- Dolnośląskie is "Lower Silesia", in the south-west, with Wrocław.
Players looking for Małopolskie clicked Wielkopolskie 12 times, and players looking for Dolnośląskie clicked Małopolskie 11 times. The words "little", "great" and "lower" are easy to mix up when you are going fast.
The double names
Kujawsko-pomorskie and Warmińsko-mazurskie are the only two voivodeships with two-part names, and they are neighbours in the north. Players swapped them 17 times. Kujawsko-pomorskie is the smaller one on the left, with Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Warmińsko-mazurskie is the large one to the east, with Olsztyn and the Masurian lakes, bordering Russia's Kaliningrad region.
The south
The south of Poland has five voivodeships side by side, and most mistakes there are clicks on a neighbour. From west to east: Dolnośląskie, Opolskie, Śląskie, Małopolskie, Podkarpackie. Świętokrzyskie, with Kielce, sits just north of Małopolskie.
How to learn all 16
- Start with the corners. Zachodniopomorskie (north-west), Podlaskie (north-east), Dolnośląskie (south-west), Podkarpackie (south-east).
- Then the middle: Łódzkie, with Mazowieckie to its east.
- Fill in the north: Pomorskie, Kujawsko-pomorskie, Warmińsko-mazurskie.
- Then the south, west to east, as above.
- Last, the two Lub-s. West is Lubuskie, east is Lubelskie.
Then play the voivodeships quiz. It also has a round with the voivodeship capitals. The game page is in Polish, but you only need to click the map. For printable practice, see our blank maps of Poland.
