South America Map Quiz: Guyana or Suriname, and Other Mix-Ups

October 26, 2026 ยท 3 min read

#south-america#maps#data

South America has only 12 countries, which makes it one of the friendlier continents to learn. On our South America map quiz, players got 70% right across 626 answers.

Argentina (96%) and Brazil (95%) are found almost every time, followed by Chile (88%) and Colombia (87%). The mistakes cluster in a few predictable places.

Suriname Guyana 11
Uruguay Paraguay 7
Ecuador Peru 7
Venezuela Colombia 6
Paraguay Argentina 6
Peru Chile 5

Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana

The most common mistake on this map. Three small territories sit side by side on the north-east coast, above Brazil. From west to east:

  • Guyana, where English is spoken
  • Suriname, where Dutch is spoken
  • French Guiana, which is part of France

A simple way to remember: west to east they go G, S, F, and the F (for France) is at the far eastern end, next to Brazil's Amapรก state. French Guiana is not a country, so our quiz does not ask for it, but it helps to know it is there.

Uruguay and Paraguay

Similar names, same region, and both smaller than their neighbours. The rule: Uruguay is on the coast, tucked between Argentina and Brazil on the Atlantic, with Montevideo on the Rรญo de la Plata. Paraguay is landlocked, further north, between Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. Paraguay and Bolivia are the only two landlocked countries in South America.

Ecuador and Peru

Ecuador is the small country on the Pacific coast north of Peru. Its name means "equator" in Spanish, and the equator runs right through it, just north of the capital Quito. If you are looking at the top of the west coast, Ecuador is the first country below Colombia.

The Falkland Islands

The hardest place on the map. Only 11 of 46 players found the Falklands, and the wrong clicks were spread all over the continent: Guyana, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil. That pattern means most players simply did not know where to look.

The Falklands are a group of islands in the South Atlantic, about 500 kilometres east of Argentina's southern coast. They are a British overseas territory, claimed by Argentina, where they are called the Islas Malvinas. On a blank map, look far off the south-east coast, level with Patagonia.

How to learn South America

  1. Brazil first. It covers almost half the continent and touches every country except Chile and Ecuador.
  2. The west coast, top to bottom: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile.
  3. The two landlocked countries: Bolivia and Paraguay, in the middle.
  4. The south-east: Argentina, Uruguay, and the Falklands offshore.
  5. The north coast, west to east: Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, then French Guiana.

When you have it, play the South America map quiz and try for 13 out of 13. The page also has a labeled map to print, and our South America flags quiz is a good next round.
