Spain's 50 Provinces: Where Players Get Lost
October 26, 2026 · 3 min read
Spain has 50 provinces, grouped into 17 autonomous communities, plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa. Our Spain provinces map game names a province and you click it on a blank map.
Since late September 2026, players have answered 2,077 questions on it, with 70% right. The easy provinces are very easy. The hard ones are almost all in one place.
The hardest provinces
| Province | Community | Found |
|---|---|---|
| Álava | Basque Country | 39% |
| Ávila | Castilla y León | 42% |
| Lleida | Catalonia | 45% |
| Segovia | Castilla y León | 45% |
| Palencia | Castilla y León | 46% |
| Valladolid | Castilla y León | 54% |
| Soria | Castilla y León | 55% |
| Zamora | Castilla y León | 55% |
| Teruel | Aragon | 56% |
| Tarragona | Catalonia | 56% |
| Salamanca | Castilla y León | 58% |
| Granada | Andalusia | 59% |
Each province was asked between 32 and 46 times.
The easiest
The Balearic Islands (95%) and Ceuta (92%) are easy because they are separate from the mainland. Valencia (92%), Huelva (90%) and Madrid (90%) are the easiest on the peninsula: Madrid in the centre, Huelva in the south-west corner on the Portuguese border.
The Castilla y León problem
Seven of the 12 hardest provinces are in Castilla y León, the largest autonomous community in Spain. It has nine provinces: León, Zamora, Salamanca, Palencia, Valladolid, Ávila, Burgos, Soria and Segovia. They are all inland, similar in size, and they sit together on the northern plateau with no coast or border to help.
The wrong clicks are mostly neighbours inside the same community:

| Valladolid | Segovia | 7 |
| Segovia | Valladolid | 6 |
| Zamora | Salamanca | 5 |
A way to learn the region, in three rows from north to south:
- North: León, Palencia, Burgos
- Middle: Zamora, Valladolid, Soria (Soria is the eastern end, alone)
- South: Salamanca, Ávila, Segovia
Ávila and Álava
Two names, one letter apart, at opposite ends of northern Spain. Ávila is in Castilla y León, just north-west of Madrid. Álava is the southern province of the Basque Country, with Vitoria-Gasteiz. Five players looking for Ávila clicked Álava.
Álava itself is the hardest province on our map. Players most often clicked La Rioja instead (and La Rioja players clicked Álava 6 times). The two are neighbours along the Ebro river, with Álava to the north. A fun fact that makes it even trickier: inside Álava there is a small piece of the province of Burgos, the Condado de Treviño.
Other mix-ups
| Asked for | Clicked instead | Times |
|---|---|---|
| Toledo | Ciudad Real | 6 |
| La Rioja | Álava | 6 |
| Badajoz | Cáceres | 4 |
| Lleida | Zaragoza | 4 |
| Granada | Málaga | 4 |
| Vizcaya | Guipúzcoa | 4 |
- Toledo and Ciudad Real in Castilla-La Mancha: Toledo is the northern one, closer to Madrid.
- Badajoz and Cáceres in Extremadura: Cáceres is the northern one, Badajoz the southern.
- Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa in the Basque Country: Vizcaya (with Bilbao) is to the west, Guipúzcoa (with San Sebastián) to the east, on the French border.
- Lleida is the inland province of Catalonia, bordering Aragon. Tarragona is the southern coastal one.
How to learn the provinces
- Learn the communities first. Our autonomous communities map has only 17, and once you know them, each province has a home.
- Then the coast, going around the peninsula from Girona to Pontevedra.
- Then the inland communities, one at a time, starting with Castilla y León.
Then play the Spain provinces game. The page also lists every province with its capital and community. It is in Spanish, but you only need to click the map.
