Baltic States Map Quiz at a Glance

The Baltic states are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, three small countries on the east coast of the Baltic Sea. This page shows them with the other six countries on the Baltic (Denmark, Finland, Germany, Poland, Russia and Sweden), with flags and capitals, and a free quiz: the three Baltic states, then the whole Baltic Sea, then the capitals.

How to Play the quiz

  1. Click any country on the map to see its name before you start.
  2. The Baltic states round asks just Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic Sea round asks all nine countries on its coast.
  3. In Capitals, a capital is named and you click its country.
  4. There is no time limit, and the right country turns green after every answer.

The Baltic states declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1990 and 1991 and joined both the European Union and NATO in 2004. They are often grouped together, but their languages differ: Latvian and Lithuanian are Baltic languages, while Estonian is related to Finnish.

Telling Them Apart

On our Europe map, players swap the three more than they miss them: Lithuania is right 68% of the time, usually taken for Latvia, and Latvia and Estonia 69%, taken for each other. Remember the alphabet from north to south, and that Lithuania is the largest of the three and the only one that borders Poland.

Baltic, Nordic or Eastern Europe?

The UN counts the Baltic states as Northern Europe, together with the Nordic countries. They are not Nordic, though Estonia has close ties to Finland across the Gulf of Finland. In everyday English they are often lumped into Eastern Europe because of their Soviet past.

The Baltic Sea

The Baltic is a shallow, brackish sea, joined to the North Sea only through the narrow straits around Denmark. Nine countries have a coast on it. Russia has two separate stretches: around St Petersburg, at the end of the Gulf of Finland, and Kaliningrad, between Poland and Lithuania.
