How many states are there in India?
India has 28 states and 8 union territories, 36 in all. States elect their own governments with a Chief Minister; union territories are run by the central government through a Lieutenant Governor or Administrator, though Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir also have elected assemblies.
The list changed recently. Telangana split from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and became the 29th state. In 2019 the state of Jammu and Kashmir became two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, leaving 28 states. In 2020 Dadra and Nagar Haveli merged with Daman and Diu, so there are 8 union territories, not 9.
The biggest and the smallest
Rajasthan is the largest state by area, about 342,000 km², mostly the Thar Desert. Uttar Pradesh has the most people, almost 200 million at the 2011 census, more than most countries. Goa is the smallest state by area, and Sikkim has the fewest people. Among the union territories, Lakshadweep is the smallest: 36 coral islands off Kerala with about 64,000 people.
Kashmir on this map
The Kashmir region is disputed between India, Pakistan and China. India claims all of it; the map shows the areas each country administers. The parts administered by Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir) and by China (Aksai Chin and the Shaksgam Valley) are hatched and are not part of the quiz. China also claims most of Arunachal Pradesh, which India administers.
