Eastern Europe runs from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and east to the Ural Mountains. Most of its countries were in the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War, and seven of them, Belarus, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine and the three Baltic states, were part of the Soviet Union itself.
What Counts as Eastern Europe?
The UN geoscheme lists ten countries as Eastern Europe. Many geographers, and the countries themselves, place Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia in Central Europe instead, and the Baltic states in Northern Europe. In everyday English, though, "Eastern Europe" usually means the whole former Eastern Bloc, which is why the wider round adds the Baltic states and the Balkans.
The Hardest Ones
On our Europe map, Moldova is right only 52% of the time; players most often click North Macedonia instead. Bulgaria is right 55% of the time (taken for Romania), Slovakia 60% (taken for Czechia) and Hungary 62% (taken for Slovakia). Belarus and Ukraine get swapped too: Belarus is the one to the north, next to Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
Russia in Europe
Only about a quarter of Russia lies in Europe, west of the Ural Mountains, but most of its people live there, including in Moscow and St Petersburg. The map shows that European part. Kaliningrad, the small piece of Russia between Poland and Lithuania, is cut off from the rest of the country.
