Western Europe stretches from Ireland and Portugal on the Atlantic to Germany and Austria in the middle of the continent. It holds the six founders of the European Union (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) and five of Europe's six microstates.
The Microstates
Five tiny countries are hidden on this map, each with a ring so you can tap it: Andorra in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, Monaco on the French Riviera, Liechtenstein between Switzerland and Austria, and San Marino and Vatican City inside Italy. Vatican City, at 0.44 km², is the smallest country in the world.
Benelux
Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg agreed their Benelux union in 1944 and later helped found the EU. On our Europe map, Luxembourg is right only 74% of the time, usually taken for Belgium: it is the small one in the southeast, where Belgium, France and Germany meet.
What Counts as Western Europe?
The UN geoscheme puts the United Kingdom and Ireland in Northern Europe, and Spain, Portugal and Italy in Southern Europe. In everyday use, and in the Cold War sense of "the West", Western Europe covers all of them, which is why the wider round adds them.
